Matte board is, essentially, an extra thick poster board. It is most often used in picture frames… when you see a picture that is smaller than the frame and there are a couple layers of color around it and it’s cut at a pretty 45 degree angle to perfectly frame the picture, that stuff is matte board. It comes in really handy in theater too. You can get it in a variety of colors, but sometimes the color is the outside layer and it’s a shade of white or gray inside. Pay attention to what you are buying. You can get matte board that is black all the way through, but you’ll find it to be more pricey. Often you can peal layers of this material off, which comes in really handy when representing recessed panels or crumbling layers in a model. It comes in a variety of thicknesses and is great to have for a variety of model building uses. I highly recommend you have an assortment of this on hand.
