There is a ruler that is 2 inches wide and usually 18 inches long that is clear and gridded in quarter inch squares. This ruler is fantastic to have when building models, especially in 1/4" scale.
It is usually available in fabric stores, or the fabric section of a large department store. This ruler makes it easy to keep repeating lines straight. It also cuts down on a lot of measuring time, because if you are measuring in 1/4" increments, you don't have to measure a few places, make dots and connect them. You simply line up the grid and go.
