As a scenic artist, I am infatuated by the entire trompe l'oeil genre of art. Literally, it means "tricking the eye." It is art that looks so dimensional you want to lick it to see if it's actually flat...
Right now until March 2 the National Gallery of Art, which is in Washington D.C., is having a special Tromp l'Oeil exhibit, and I wish I could go. (I just bought a house, so I need to put a hold on travelling for a few months.) If your travels take you anywhere close, you should go. The art is awesome and inspirational. They have some highlights on their web-site, so even if you can't make it in person, check it out.
National Gallery Trompe l'Oeil Exhibit I'm getting drool on the keyboard. I have had the opportunity to see the Charles Wilson Peal piece in person before, as it's usually housed in Philadelphia, and I have spent many a Sunday at the Art Museum there. (Sunday admission is discounted there.) I can say with certainty that it's much better in person than on this site, so I can only imagine what the rest look like in person.
