I was browsing the web and came across this site that has some really great advice on building puppets.

Puppetry is a great skill to have in theatre.  My favorite theatrical artist, Julie Taymor, has a vast background in puppetry that she uses very effectively in her work.  (Think about the costumes in Lion King.)  There are times that puppets can add something truly special to a performance.

Recently, when I designed Disney's Beauty and the Beast, we decided that the old, ugly witch would be a puppet head attached in a cape that would be flown out suddenly for the transformation into the beautiful enchantress.  The cape was draped around the enchantress and she operated the puppet.  The decision helped a potentially difficult transformation run smoothly and that became a rather magical moment for those watching.

This site has some really great puppet building advice.  Puppet Builder is run by a very talented and focused craftsman.  Even if building puppets isn't exactly your thing, check out the site.  His work is inspiring.
