Since starting Theater Helper, I have discovered that there are others in this world who would like to contribute material. One of these others is Michael Diederich.
I attended undergrad with Mike at SUNY Fredonia where we both obtained BFAs in Production Design. Since then he has become the head tech type at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. (He’s the TD, but because of crazy union laws, he can’t be called the TD, but that is his function.) I lost touch with him after college, but then I moved to Utica and he has been generous in helping me network in the local theatrical community. He is currently working on his master’s degree while working full time, which makes him very brave. (Someone once told me that if you’re going to be brave, you’d better have a high tolerance for pain.) Mike dabbles in a little bit of everything from costumes to scenery to props to pyro to lighting, but his main joy does seem to be lighting. (Ok, so he gets giddy about pyro too.) I personally extend a warm welcome to Mike, and look forward to reading what he has to share. His first piece can be found in the props section and is about remote control cars. Next Wednesday check back for his second piece on storage of PAR lenses and lamps, and the Wednesday after that to learn about cutting gels. (Are you seeing a pattern here?)
