Almost all of my techie friends have a college education.  Why is this the most common path to take?  Here are the top 7 reasons I think this is the case.

  1. If you can succeed in college, potential employers know that you have a certain amount of dedication and responsibility.  It gives them a sense of what their minimum expectation can be.
  2. The college experience allows you a safe place to make mistakes, where there are teachers available to catch you.  Mistakes are some of the most memorable ways to learn, but can be very painful when made in the “real” world.
  3. College is the most structured path to take, and the most tried and true for today’s society.  (C’mon everyone else is doing it.)
  4. Professors write fantastic letters of recommendation, especially for students who have an obvious love of the subject.
  5. College provides you with a base from which to network.  Your teachers will know people who work in your field, and may be able to help you contact them.  Other alumni in your field may also provide valuable support when the time comes for you to step into the “real world.”
  6. College students and alumni usually all have access to some form of a career development office.  This is a greatly useful resource for refining your resume, proofreading your cover letter and keeping letters of recommendation on file, both open and confidential ones.  Your tuition helped pay for it, so use this resource.
  7. College allows you to test the waters and be more certain that theater is where you want to be before you burn all of your other bridges.  It also gives you a more well rounded education that qualifies you to change your mind and do something other than theater later.  If you aren’t completely certain of your path, it’s good to have a backup plan.
